Its name In Latin it is "ruber" meaning red and its color is due to the mixture of iron and chromium in its composition.
It is a variety of corundum or aluminum oxide.
Symbology: Known everywhere, protagonist of legends, the ancients Hindus believed that the gem burned within them and that its power was to guarantee long life. They used to observe if its color darkened to know if any misfortune was coming. The ancient Greeks used to name it "anthrax" which means live coal because when exposed to the sun its color is similar to that of a burning coal.
